Position: Shelter Worker – Scott Place
Classification: Hourly, Full Time
Supervisor: Shelter Manager/Community Services Director
Description: This position must maintain the security & confidentiality needed for this type of specialized program. Able to intervene in conflict or crisis situations & is responsible for maintaining documentation, ensuring the smooth operation of the shelter during the assigned hours. Employee will work with other staff & volunteers to create a supportive community, helping to meet the needs of each resident.
Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED. Previous experience in social service & working with homeless &/or low income individuals is preferred. Excellent computer knowledge; strong communication skills. Ability to work independently & make sound decisions. Desire to work with homeless &/or low income individuals. Valid Driver’s License. Must be able to obtain a Food Handlers Card, CPR, First Aid training, & any other certifications that may be required for the position. *Some certifications are provided/paid for by employer. Be able to provide own transportation; complete Criminal Background Check & Protective Services Record Check; TB Risk Assessment or TB screening by Mantoux method.
Job Responsibilities Must be knowledgeable or willing to learn about the needs of homeless of all ages, gender, race, disabilities, addictions, etc. Must be capable of working all shifts (day, afternoon, midnight), weekends, & some holidays as required. Maintain confidentiality of shelter & resident matters. Ensure building security & resident safety as well as appearance & cleanliness. Complete shelter referrals, & basic intakes on paper. Maintain close communication with supervisor, case managers, support staff, & other shelter workers through email, meetings, & shift logs. Provide motivation & support under resident service plans that is necessary for residents to meet needs. Monitor resident’s conduct & enforce shelter rules, as per handbook. Maintain daily activity logs which specify additional duties &/or shift. Attend staff meetings & trainings. Other duties as assigned by supervisory staff &/or Community Services Director.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job the employee occasionally is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, & listen & communicate verbally & in written form. The employee must be able to lift &/or move up to 20 pounds. Have the ability to walk up & down steps 4 or more times daily.
Wage: $9.16 – $9.59 p. hr.
